Kayon Mountain is one of those rare family-run estates that feels both ambitious and deeply rooted. Owned and managed by Ismael Hassen Aredo and his family since 2012, the farm spans 500 hectares across the Guji highlands, with around 300 hectares dedicated to coffee. It straddles the villages of Taro and Sewana in the Shakiso district — a remote, forested corner of southern Ethiopia that’s as beautiful as it is fertile.

Ismael leads a team of 25 full-time staff and up to 300 seasonal workers during harvest, offering transport, good wages, and even funding for local schools and admin buildings. In a region where mining often pulls workers away from coffee, these gestures mean a lot — helping to build loyalty and stability from one season to the next.

Shade trees like acacia cover much of the farm, helping to regulate temperature and provide compost for natural fertilisation. The coffee is carefully handpicked, depulped the same day, then fermented and washed before drying on raised beds. The result is a clean, classic expression of Guji’s highland terroir — grown with care, processed with precision, and rooted in a real sense of place.

Kayon Mountain stands as proof that coffee farming in Ethiopia can be both progressive and community-focused — a balance of stewardship, skill, and sustainability that shows in every cup.

We roast coffee fresh each Monday, if stock has sold out we will ship the following roast day. Please refer to our shipping page for more information.
