An hour or so from Oporapa's town centre, up in the steep mountains is a monastery built by monks (Los Monjes) to show their dedication to their faith. The monastery played an important role in the cultural development of the region and a strong sense of faith and tradition is felt across the whole municipality.
Los Monjes is a community of around 100 coffee growing families who grow their coffee in the rich volcanic soil on the steep hillsides around Oporapa. Their strong faith is reflected in their traditional growing methods and varieties, creating a unique profile for this region.
